I have been visiting with my parents over the last week in Northern Ohio. My Dad was born on Veterans' Day, November 11, only it was called Armistice Day then. In the 11th month, on the 11th day, at the 11th hour, the guns of the Great War fell silent. The countries of Europe returned to politics through diplomacy, and nothing was really settled. Since Germany and her allies were not decisively defeated, twenty years later we had to go through the whole thing again in World War II, but at least the Axis powers were defeated, at great cost in lives and treasure. Unfortunately, the Communist question was left open. Rather than argue the merits of miliarily defeating the Soviet Union, let me just say that instead, we fought a cold war, until the Soviet Union fell. But that wasn't a real defeat, and so here we have Communism on the rise again in Russia and China, joined by fascism in the Islamic countries. Everyone can see it coming, but no one wants to say it out loud. Everyone seems to feel that these people can be appeased. But they can't. In essence, they seem to be angry because they "don't get no respect" and they want to pick a fight on their terms to show us that we aren't so tough. We'll see.
Meanwhile, why the Bush administration seems to be playing footsie with the Saudis is beyond me. I would rather walk everywhere if necessary, than to do business with these slimy bastards. To put it in perspective, Osama and the Al Quaida bunch are the radicals who just can't wait, while the Saudis are engaged in the art of infiltration, with the goal of toppling us without firing a shot. It looks like they are succeeding.

Jay21,
ReplyDeleteThank you. The trip was long, and exhausting. But I had a good time.
