Over at The Truth About Guns they ask The Question of the Day: How Often Do You Practice Your Draw?. I don't know about you, but I don't practice it enough. In fact, just now I did 20 draws, maybe 10 were correctly done. One wag suggested that those who concealed carry should probably do about 10 slow, by the numbers draws a day. That should be slow...by the numbers...perfect draws every day.
Watch the embedded video for a demonstration of what is meant by slow, perfect, by the numbers draw. One place I might disagree with him is when he places his finger on the trigger. I was taught that you do not place it on the trigger until you have your sights on the target, and you are going to shoot. That way you can always decide not to shoot. And you pray you never have to, but you are always prepared to do so. As they say in the video, slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.
Finally, watch Jerry Miculek as he does very fast draw from concealment. We should all be so fast and accurate. But he has had a lot of time to practice. Notice his concealment style. I have over time developed the same method of concealment which doesn't require a lot of changes to my clothing. A light shirt or sport jacket and I am good to go.
By the way, every weapon is a compromise. Glocks are good, reliable handguns that carry a lot of fire power. 1911 style pistols are also good, even in the less expensive versions from the Philippines. Try a number of different pistols before you buy. After 20 years or so, I am no longer searching for the best weapon, the best caliber, the most reliable brand. I have also settled on the belt and holster that suits my style. I have pretty much settled on what works for me and is "good enough." I will never find the "perfect," but I won't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. YMMV.
Now for some more practice
